The LDS records show that William M. Morris was born in 1834 at Knightstown, Rush [sic, it is in Henry Co.] Co., Indiana. It is very likely that these were from a Bible or records from Jonathan Marvin Morris' family. However, since most census records indicate that William Morris was born in Michigan I am using that until proven wrong. I do believe that his parents were only in Michigan for a brief time and that the family was gone from there by 1840. There is a family picture taken about the time William died, possibly at the time of his funeral. It is now my belief that Willam M. Morris was indeed the son of William Morris and Sidney Ann Montgomery and was born in Cass County, MI about 1834. However, his original name was Wilson M Morris. He deserted from Camp Wickliffe, KY. He enlisted in the Union Army (enlisted from Henry County, Indiana) in October 1861; he was then residing in Greensboro, Henry County, IN. In 1860 he had been enumerated with his wife, Elizabeth Lutholtz and their children John and William; in 1862 a daughter, Josephene, was born.

In 1910, the family was enumerated in Britton, Oklahoma County where Albert [Elbert] was an Agent selling Insurance. In 1920, his widow, Jessie B. Morris and the younger children were enumerated in Lindsay, Garvin County, Oklahoma. I am trying to determine where and when Albert died.

By 1900 he was living in Custer County, Montana. He was on the Board of Directors for Powder River County, Montana. He died in Fremont, Nebraska where he had travelled for medical treatment but his condition could not be helped; his wife's sister's husband was Dr. G. H. Rathbun and she was the informant for information on the death certificate.

The identification of Lena Copeland as her niece, and the tentative identification of Lena Copeland's parents as Joseph Copeland [Coplen] and Margaret Morris, leads to the first possible relatives [brothers/sisters] of William M. Morris [identification by Norman Davis].

It is unlikely that there will ever be absolute proof of the marriage of William (Wilson) M. Morris and Josephine Burgess. After working on the family for over 20 years and studying thousands of documents, I am convinced of the connection. William Morris and Sidney Ann Montgomery evidently married in Ohio. In the late 1820s, they were in Cass County, Michigan where they were enumerated in 1830; before 1840 they moved to Union County, Ohio where they lived the rest of their lives. William Morris is the son of Robert Morris and Mary Crowley who were early settlers in Butler County, Ohio.

Please note that Jane and Jonathan had 11 children, 10 of whom were still alive in 1900. Because differing names or initials and differing birthdates were used on the Censuses of 1860/70/80, it is difficult to know who is whom. Fanny may be the child that died or the one who married at the age of 14. There is also a M. A. listed on the 1880 census and she may be the same as Julia. Julius Edward is called Edwin on one document and Edward on another, and there is some evidence that he was known within the family as Ed.

The Burgess family moved from Lewis County, MO to Grayson County, Texas possibly late 1871; the earliest document [deed] in Grayson County is dated 27 January 1872 when 160 acres was purchased on Case Creek from Thomas Moore.

The tombstone of Jonathan Burgess seems to date from his death. However, touching it is a larger monument which is quite wide. The base appears to be much older than the stone on top and is, in fact, of a different kind of stone. The tombstone on top is for Jane and Jonathan BURGERS. The dates for Jonathan's death are the same as for the stone adjacent. Only the last name is different. It seems that Jane [at least] changed her name. People I have corresponded with in Northern Texas speak of a Burgess family who changed their names to differentiate themselves from some other Burgesses. I suspect that it is this family.

In the 1900 Census Jane was enumerated as the head of the household. Jane had had 11 children, 10 of whom were still alive. She was born in VA, parents both born in NC. She could read but not write English, owned her home free. She was a landlord with 0 months unemployed. Edward her son and Betty her daughter were living with her.

Per 1900 Census, she had had 11 children and 6 were still living.

After she died, her remains were sent, via train, to Oshawa, Ontario for internment near her husband [source is the Sheldon Enterprise]. Union Cemetery gives her age as 68 years and 5 months. Please see complete text under Notes.

Some reports from relatives say that Jane remarried [in Canada] after Daniel's death, perhaps to a Mr. Martin. This I have not been able to confirm. The marriage did not last long and she moved with some of her children first to Minnesota then to North Dakota.

20. JONATHAN BURGESS
Born prior to 1800 [based on Joel's birth year]

Died in Sempronius, Cayuga County, NY in 1847; gravesite unknown. He was a widower at the time of his death.
Per the 1880 Census in Grayson County, Texas, Jonathan's father and mother were both born in New York.
There were at least 10 children in this family, but details about them are unknown. The family is known to have been members of the Baptist Church in Sempronius, Cayuga, NY.

Joel Willis Burgess b. c. 1815 NY, m. Sarah Flanner on 29 Aug 1841 in Lewis County, MO. By 1860, Joel and his family had moved to Kansas and were enumerated in Johnson Co. in 1860 and in Labette County in 1870. Joel died in 1879 per Civil War Pension records; his son, Newton W. Burgess, is enumerated in Leavenworth County in 1880 (Newton W. Burgess was also a Civil War veteran and his pension papers were filed in Montana).

Jonathan b 25 Aug 1820 NY; m. Jane Roberts 25 June 1843 Lewis Co., MO, d. 12 Jan 1892 Grayson Co., TX. Buried Ethel Cemetery. There are two tombstones for him - Burgess and Burgers.

21. MARY COLLINS

Little is known of Mary Collins' family. She and Jonathan were married prior to moving to Sempronius in 1797 (marriage was probably c. 1794). She is likely the daughter of Benjamin Collins and his wife Elizabeth.

22. JOSHUA ROBERTS

Joshua first appears in the records of Patrick Co., VA with the marriage to Elizabeth Smith. The only other Roberts in Patrick County at that time was a William Roberts; have not been able to connect the two. They resided in Patrick County until at least April 1834 when they sold their land and by August 1834 they were in Lewis County, Missouri where they purchased land. Elizabeth died in the latter 1830's [no cemetery records available] and Joshua married Nancy Davis, probably a widow. It seems that he married a third time. It is very likely that he moved to Texas with his daughter and son-in-law in the early 1870's.

Joshua was residing with his daughter, Jane, and her husband Jonathan Burgess at the time of the 1880 Census. I consider it very likely that Joshua is buried with his daughter, Jane, in the Ethel Cemetery. Please see the notes under #10 and #11.

The identification of Ebenezer as Alanson Parks' father was the result of combined work of Fred Hayes and myself. The letter to Roxy Tracy was critical in identifying Aaron Parks of Valparaiso as a relative, then the county history with Aaron's biography identified Ebenezer as his father. Further investigation led to Ebenezer's will which also identifies Alanson as a son and names the surviving children.

Family tradition says that he married in VA, then travelled through TN and then north [Indiana?, Ohio?] and that his first wife died and he married a relative of hers. There is a persistent family tradition that they were cousins of Vice President Hendricks and that the family was of Dutch descent. If this is correct, then they would be part of the Frontier Hendrickses; however, John's birthplace needs to be clarified as in the 1880 Census Emeline's father is listed as born in England.
(His first name was found by a Robert Parks; I found the record where he is listed as from England in the 1880 Census).

While there are some purported genealogies of Bartlett, there are difficulties with them - such as requiring that he reside in two place at the same time and be born prior to 1744. The name Bartlett is unique enough that I believe it may be sorted out. The problem is possibly due to a missing generation where there are men with the same name. Since the area where Bartlett Smith lived, and probably came from, has had courthouses burn there are difficulties as official land and deed records are gone.]

Aaron served in the Revolutionary War (his father was killed in action defending the country per grandson Aaron's biography - however, we do not know that he served in the Revolutionary War or in earlier skirmishes; sadly, we are yet to identify Aaron's father) and enlisted from North Ashford, Connecticut.

Sabrina b. 18 May 1792, m. Artemas Parmenter. Enumerated in 1820 in Malone, NY; 1830 in Franklin County and then emigrated to Ohio and then to Michigan where they both died in Berrien County..
Mary "Polly" b. 11 May 1794, m. David Livingston c. 1810-1812; resided in St. Lawrence County until after David's death in 1829/1830. Is said to have remarried and moved to northern Ohio where she died.
Alanson b. 3 Jan 1798. Per some records he was residing in Toronto in 1861 (unverified).
Aaron b. 14 July 1800 Sudbury, Rutland, VT; resided in Constable, Franklin County, NY all his adult life

There is a possible other child, Susan Prescott, who is named as a daughter in documents from 1818. It is not known if Prescott is a middle or married name. She was born about 1801. There is also an adopted daughter, Myra Merriam, mentioned in pension documents. She, too, was born in the early 1800s but cannot be located after 1820.

Aaron married Rebecca, a widow, c. 1805-07. We do not know where they married but some documents indicate that Aaron and his family moved from Vermont to New York in 1806.

JOHN H. MORRIS DIES IN NEBRASKA

John H. Morris , chairman of the board of county commissioners, passed away at Fremont, Neb., Friday morning December 15, 1922 and internment occurred in a cemetery there the following Sunday.

Death was the result of kidney trouble and other complications. Mr. Morris, accompanied by his wife, went to Fremont, Neb. about two weeks before where he was hopeful that special hospital treatment would better his health, but it was of no avail, for his condition had become too far advanced. While he had not been feeling in the best of health for several months, he went to Miles City on the advice of Dr. James, for consultation by the doctors there. Even then his condition would not permit the extraction of several teeth that needed attention. After a thorough diagnosis, the Miles City doctors told Mr. Morris his case was hopeless and his days were numbered . They advised him to attend to any legal papers without delay. He returned to his home, drooped in spirit and daily became more restless as his vision became impaired and his physical condition weakened. Although he was given every possible attention to alleviate his condition, he had passed beyond the relief of medicines.

John H. Morris was about 47 years of age at the time of his death. He was born in Texas, and came to this part of Montana in the early 90's. As a cowboy he started to work for J. H. Burgess on the old S H ranch at the fork of Powder River, now known as the Ben Johnson place. He followed the life of a cowpuncher for a number of years and then started ranching for himself, settling first on Hay creek on the place now owned by William Lavell. He was working for George Pemberton and others at the T A ranch which was formerly known as the SH ranch when he met Miss Reta McArthur, a school teacher near Alzada, and later married her. Morris sold his Hay creek ranch and bought the ranch of Jack Watt on the Little Powder river, where he has made his home for the past 15 years. He is survived by his beloved wife, three children, Wayne, Jack, and Margaret Morris, and by a sister and two brothers. At the time of his death, Mr. Morris was chairman of the Powder Riber County Democratic Central committee.

Mr. Morris has been in public life since the creation of Powder River county in the spring of 1909. At that time he was appointed as one of the county commissioners by the legislature, and by the county board was elected its chairman. He was re-elected commissioner to the four year term at the general election two years ago and had two more yeras to serve at the time of his death.

Be it said of "Johnny" Morris that he was a conscientious public official and did what he believed was for the benefit of the majority. He was well acquaited with county affairs and contributed a large part of his time to the interests of the public. He was never too busy to listen to and adjust county difficulties for he had a faculty of appeasing and harmonizing public grievances.

While resident of the county had been prepared for the dath of Commissioner Morris they were hopeful that his condition was not so aggravated as reported and that he would regain his health. His many friends in this county express their sincere sympathy to his bereaved relatives in their great sorrow.

Funeral services for the late John Miles City Saturday afternoon, and were conducted by the Rev. M. Van de Mark, and were attended by a host of friends who paid their last respect to one of the most colorful characters ever connected with the old range days in Montana.

Mr. Burgess was one of the old timers, and saw and participated in the rise and fall of the cow business when herds were rated by the thousand head. Mr. Burgess first came to Montana in 1886 when he drove 5,000 steers from Texas to a location north of the Yellowstone. Horace Broaddus, a brothers [sic] of the three Broaddus men now living here was with this drive but he returned to Texas. These steers were owned by the Newman Cattle company of El Paso, Texas, and whose headquarters in Montana was on Powder river at the mouth of Cache creek where E. Lee Wilson now has a ranch, and the brand was the N and the manager was Mr. Haston, an uncle of the Broaddus boys. In the spring of 1887 following the noted hard winter Mr. Burgess took 1700 head of steers the last of the 5000 to the Rosebud agency __ South Dakota for summer range.

Later Mr. Burgess went to work for the Northern Cattle company of which Joe Scott was manager, and it had headquarters at the mouth of Little Powder, a few miles below Broadus, and this land is now owned by Osborn Pemberton.

Their brand was the SH and Mr. Burgess remained with this outfit until it dispersed its cattle, and when it sold he and the late Henry Peays brought the remaining calves. Mr. Burgess took his calves to the head of Hay creek, now the Robison place, and established a ranch. Mr. Peays start in the cattle business was made at that time and he took his stock to the present Peays ranch on the Powder river.

Mr. Burgess was successful in his cattle business and sold out after he and his wife went to Rosebud, Montana, to live. The call of the Powder river country was too great to resist and after moving to Rosebud he spent most of his summers among his old friends in this section where he was an ever welcome guest at every ranch home.

Mr. Burgess was not a big man physically but he had high courage, an undaunted spirit that carried him through many a crisis in his career. Many of the old time cowboys remember him and will note his passing with regret. He always paid the best wages to his men but he was loyal to his employers whose interests always came first and as a cow man he stood at the head.

Among those who attended the funeral in Miles City from here were Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Pemberton, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Gilmore, Mr. and Mrs. P. S. Richardson, John and William Broaddus.

John Broaddus and Tom Gilmore were two of the pallbearers.

He leaves a widow to mourn his loss.
